Traffic warning as overnight closures hit the A2

Diversion signs will be in place making the closures clear for motorists, starting tonight on October 18 and ending on October 29, with the majority taking place between 9.30pm until 6am.

According to National Highways South East, the roadworks will shut the A2 Londonbound carriageway between Ebbsfleet and the M25 and A2 Pepperhill from 9:30pm to 6am for 12 nights.

The A2 coastbound carriageway from the M25 junction 2 to Ebbsfleet will also close from 10pm to 6am and A2 Bean coastbound and A2 Ebbsfleet coastbound exit slip roads from 9:30pm to 6am.

In August, similar closures occurred as Highways England installed a new flyover as part of a huge infrastructure project which will see improvements made to the junction between Dartford and Gravesend.

Costing £122 million, the project will see workers make the roundabout to the north of the A2 at Bean junction "significant bigger" and controlled by traffic lights", whilst the roundabout to the south of the A2 will also be made bigger.

There will be a new bridge over the A2 to provide extra capacity, located to the east of the existing Bean Lane bridge. This existing bridge will then be used for northbound traffic, and a new slip road constructed onto the A2 for eastbound traffic.

The overhaul of the junction is planned due to increasing numbers of homes being built in the area over the coming years with 15,000 in the pipeline for Ebbsfleet Garden City.

• Tuesday, October 19 to Friday, October 22 (four nights): A2 Ebbsfleet London-bound exit slip road from 9.30pm to 6am, A2 coastbound carriageway from M25 junction 2 to Ebbsfleet from 10pm to 6am and A2 Bean coastbound exit slip road closed from 9.30pm.

• Saturday, October 23: A2 Ebbsfleet London-bound exit slip road from 9.30pm to 6am, A2 coastbound carriageway from M25 junction 2 to Ebbsfleet from 10pm to 6am and A2 Bean coastbound exit slip road closed from 9.30pm.

• Sunday, October 24: A2 Ebbsfleet London-bound exit slip road from 9.30pm to 6am.

• Monday, October 25: A2 London-bound carriageway from Ebbsfleet to the M25, A2 Pepperhill London-bound entry slip road and A2 coastbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip roads at Bean from 9.30pm to 6am.

• Tuesday, October 26 to Friday, October 29 (four nights): A2 Bean London-bound entry and exit slip roads, A2 Pepperhill London-bound entry slip road, A296 Watling Street between Darenth Wood Road roundabout and the Bean Lane roundabout, B255/Bluewater Parkway southbound and Bean north roundabout, and Bean Lane in both directions between the north and south roundabouts from 9.30pm to 6am.
