A housebuilder is supporting a foodbank in Lewisham to help increase the number of food parcels delivered to members of the local community.

The £500 in which Bellway London has given to Lewisham Foodbank will help support those in need.

The foodbank warehouse, which is based at Hope Centre in Malham Road, has around 30 volunteers who help to prepare and distribute a range of items to five centres in Lewisham.

There the people in receipt of a foodbank voucher can collect their parcels.

Logistics administrator at Lewisham Foodbank, Martin Anns said: “We are extremely grateful for the donation from Bellway, which has been vital to ensuring we can continue to support residents who are in need.

“The foodbank is relied upon by single parents and families, as well as those living alone, and they are there for those who are referred to the centre from organisations such as a housing association or Citizens Advice.”

The food parcels include a range of long-life food, such as pasta, rice and tinned items, as well as toilet roll and shower gel, with each box lasting up to three days.

Martin added: “The donation from Bellway has been a great help and that money is already being used and, in total, is equivalent to supporting 20 households.

“We have been working within the community since October 2012 and we have a strong team here that is dedicated to helping residents who need the support.”

James Pitt, sales manager at Bellway London, said: “Due to the difficulties that have been posed by the pandemic over the last year, we recognise that organisations like Lewisham Foodbank need to be assisted.

“Knowing that our donation is already helping people out and will support up to 20 households is pleasing to hear.

“The work that Lewisham Foodbank does is a real credit to the area, and we want to commend every volunteer involved.

“Bellway is committed to championing the communities that we build in and we will strive to support grassroots organisations wherever possible.”

Bellway London is building a range of one, two and three-bedroom apartments at Maybrey Works, off Worsley Bridge Road.
