Greenwich's Royal Observatory set for new £4.5m vision

The team selected for an estimated £450,000 contract will oversee an ambitious revamp of the historic astronomical complex which straddles the meridian line in south east London's Greenwich Park.

The Royal Observatory is a Unesco World Heritage site dating back to the 17th century, and features a mix of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings

The project should be complete for 2025 which is the 350th anniversary of the observatory's opening.

Practices have until 10am on September 2 to express interest for the prestigious job to enhance the visitor experience at the 350-year-old observatory, which has played a major global role in the history of astronomy and navigation.

The museum complex is looking to shortlist three heritage architects, with the winning firm to lead a multidisciplinary team drawing up a new vision for the site.

The new vision is looking to combine site improvements new galleries and a masterplan to revamp the workings of the site.

The aim of the development includes innovative solutions to improve the visitor route and flow, maximise internal and external spaces and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Retail, cafes and gallery spaces will be fitted with the new extension, as well as an outdoor bespoke art commission.
