FIVE people were arrested and two handguns seized last night as part of a police investigation into gang crime.
Officers from Operation Trilogy, Lewisham police's 'gang disruption' team, stopped a Ford Focus in Greenwich at around 7pm.
A 9mm automatic handgun with ammunition was found nearby.
A 25-year-old man was arrested and bailed to return to police in February.
Armed police then stopped a Renault Megane in Peckham at 9.30pm.
A search found an 8mm handgun with ammunition, as well as masks and gloves.
Two men, aged 19 and 20, and two women, aged 19 and 20, were arrested. They remain in custody at south London police stations.
Inspector Sarah Davies, from Operation Trilogy, said: "It is undoubted that the recovery of two guns, both capable of firing live rounds, has prevented somebody being seriously injured."
