1961 - Copenhagen barbers went back to work after the longest strike in history - it had lasted since 1938.
1981 - Peter Sutcliffe - known as the Yorkshire Ripper - was arrested.
1999 - Former American presidential candidate Bob Dole's wife, Elizabeth, announced she would run for the presidency.
2001 - A New York woman said she was going to sue the Manhattan police for $10m after a police officer made her walk home in her underwear as a punishment for drink-driving.
2002 - A new survey revealed that Britons would prefer to have a bright cheerful funeral service, rather than a traditional sombre one. Eight out of 10 people said they would consider 'personal touches' for their own funeral.
