One of the leaders behind the Covid-19 vaccination programme in south east London has spoken out "urging" people to get their potentially lifesaving second dose as soon as possible.

The largest ever NHS vaccination programme has this week entered its last phase, with under 18s now offered their first jab of the Covid vaccine and the rollout of second doses takes on increased importance.

Covid-19 infection rates are steadily rising locally, thanks in part to the spread of the Indian variant, so Dr Jonty Heaversedge, Clinical Chair for NHS South East London Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), is encouraging South East Londoners to come forward for their "vital and lifesaving" second dose

The plea comes as people aged 40 and over are being contacted to book their second jab on the national booking system from eight weeks after their first dose.

New research this week has also showed how important the second jab is at protecting people against the Delta (Indian) variant, with second dose having substantially better protection than one dose.

Both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines being more than 92% effective against hospitalisation and serious disease after two doses.

Dr Heaversedge said: “Getting fully vaccinated is the single most important step we can take to protect ourselves, our families and our communities against COVID-19.”

“To ensure maximum protection, I urge everyone in South East London to book in their second dose as soon as possible.

“Thanks to the incredible work of NHS staff and volunteers in London, seven out of ten adults have now received at least one dose of the vaccine, and in doing so, are helping the country as a whole beat this devastating virus.

"The offer of the vaccine is evergreen, so if you have been invited but are yet to make an appointment, please do so today and help bring us one step closer to freedom.”

Andrew Bland, Accountable Officer for South East London Integrated Care System Lead and CCG, said: “If you haven’t booked your first vaccination yet, you still can.

"As well as being able to book an appointment at one of our many vaccination clinics online or by calling 119, we have a series of walk-in vaccination clinics that you do not need an appointment for across South East London over the coming week.

“These walk-in clinics are being held in hospitals, health centres, sports stadiums, parks, housing estates and community centres across South East London. Check our website www.selondonccg.nhs.uk/popupclinics for the latest information and timings for each clinic.”
