MEETINGS will be taking place in the new year to sort out the timetable for building a new cycle bridge over the River Darenth.

The bridge is part of the Connect2 project from sustainable transport group Sustrans, which has just won a £50m Lottery bid.

Bexley Council had urged people to take part in the mobile phone vote in support of Sustrans' bid.

The £600,000 cycle path will link Dartford and Crayford Marshes, giving better access to the marshes and also to Erith town centre and the railway station and a short cut for pedestrians and cyclists.

Plans include developing connections along the Darenth Valley, linking into Dartford's town centre and Central Park.

One element will be to divert the river from one half of an existing twin bore tunnel, to allow walkers and cyclists to use it in all but the highest of floods.

Altogether the £50m will fund 79 projects across the country.
