SEVEN truckloads of furniture are being sent to schoolchildren in west Africa.

The departure of the first of the 40-foot trucks was held at Crofton Secondary School, Manwood Road, Brockley.

Around 800 classroom chairs, 400 tables, 20 cupboards and 50 computers, along with noticeboards, materials and books, will be donated to schools in the Gambia, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

This forms part of a Lewisham Council scheme to recycle and reuse as much equipment from the borough's schools as possible.

Young Mayor of Lewisham Justin Cole said: "Building bridges internationally bet- ween schools is an excellent way to share resources, opinions and ideas and also encourages understanding of different cultures.

"As a borough, we should use this as a stepping stone for development and progress.

"We should find ways to sustain this idea and involve as many students as possible."
