A HOSPITAL has introduced a state-of-the-art scanner.
The new scanner at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Stadium Road, Woolwich, takes X-ray pictures through 360 degrees around a patient's body.
This information is then processed by computers and transformed into a series of images showing cross sections of the part of the body being scanned.
Staff say it will be a vital tool in diagnosing patients with suspected cancers, serious head injuries, thoracic or abdominal problems and patients who may need interventional procedures such as biopsies.
Mark Judge, imaging service manager at the hospital in Woolwich, said: "During scans, patients are often required to hold their breath, so it is much better for them the new scanner is so quick.
"The increased detail will provide clinicians with improved diagnostic information, enabling them to diagnose and treat patients at an earlier stage, thereby improving the long-term outcomes for patients."
