Southwark Council has launched targeted testing in South Bermondsey after the Covid-19 variant first identified in South Africa was found in the area.

This is a different and unrelated case to the case recently found in the Faraday Ward, the council said.

It is delivering letters to about 2,000 homes and is asking residents in the wider area to take a test if they have symptoms and consider taking a test if they don’t have symptoms.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: “There is no cause for alarm.

“We are writing to residents in a defined area as a precaution because this variant of Covid-19 may be more easily passed between people.

“It is important residents in the area have a test if they have Covid-19 symptoms.

“It is also important they continue to follow the current rules on social distancing and meeting with people from outside their household.”

Residents who are concerned or have any questions can email publichealth@southwark.gov.uk.
