A Bromley nine-year-old took inspiration from the late Captain Tom Moore, running a marathon over four weeks for a cancer charity.

Bertie Sutton took on the 26.2 miles in chunks throughout February, crossing the ‘finish line’ the cheers of supporting neighbours on the final day of the month, with a total time of four hours 26 minutes.

So far, Bertie has raised an impressive £758 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He has already bettered his original fundraising target of £100, by over 700 per cent and, with gift aid added, will have raised almost £1,000 on behalf of Macmillan.

Bertie said of his fundraising efforts: “I decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support to help people with cancer, and their families.

“I saw that Captain Tom raised a lot of money by walking so I decided to run a marathon in a month for Macmillan. I am extremely grateful to all the people who donated money.”

Macmillan Relationship Fundraising Manager for London, Hebe Wright, said: “On behalf of all our Macmillan nurses, doctors, support workers and cancer experts, I want to say a massive thank-you to Bertie for such an outstanding fundraising effort.

“Macmillan Cancer Support relies almost entirely on donations – we simply couldn’t help the growing number of people who need us, without the support and generosity of inspiring individuals like Bertie.

"He will help ensure Macmillan can continue to be there for people living with cancer, from the moment of their diagnosis.”
