Snow has caused havoc on the roads and railway lines of south London, and further snowy showers are expected today and tomorrow with a Met Office yellow weather warning for snow still in place.

The rare snow day has hit train services across south east London particularly hard, and yesterday Thameslink and Southeastern both cancelled a number of services.

Passengers are being warned against all but absolutely essential travel, and a number of train routes have already been cancelled ahead of forecasted bad weather today (February 9).

Whilst 'trains on all routes may experience difficulties due to the severe weather conditions', the Bromley North Line has already been fully closed for the day, with no replacement transport available.

Southeastern said: "Snow and icy conditions in the south east are still causing disruption to the rail network.

"Trains on all routes that are open today may experience difficulties due to the severe weather conditions.

"The following routes will remain closed throughout today, with no replacement transport available:

  • Bromley North Line
  • Medway Valley Line
  • Sheerness Line."

In an update early today, the train operator said there "remains a high risk of disruption today because of the weather conditions.

"At present, there are no plans to close down the network early based on the current forecast. However, this cannot be completely ruled out, so if you are travelling this evening, please do you make sure you confirm your train is running before you travel."

If you must make a critical journey over the next few days then please do check before you travel, allow extra time and prepare in advance for your journey to be disrupted.

"We are continuously reviewing the weather forecasts so we can react accordingly, and we'll update this message if there are any changes."

Southeastern added that ticket acceptance means you can use your ticket on the London Underground where reasonable, and they hope all the closed routes will be able to open on Wednesday.

Thameslink also stressed that with an amber weather warning issued, timetables may be changed at short notice due to ice or snow on the track.

Gritters have been out in force across south east London, prioritising major distributor roads, schools and emergency service bases, hospitals and high streets.

Vaccine centres are also being prioritised, and are all open and functioning despite the weather.
