Independent pubs, bars and sports and social clubs in Bromley are being encouraged to apply for grants from a £1 million council fund.

The Independent Public House and Clubs Grant targets local businesses severely impacted by the latest lockdown with limited access to support

Grants range from £3000 for the smallest premises, and up to £10,500 for larger premises.

Jamie and Carole Muir, who have been the managing The Oak in Widmore Road, Bickley for 16 years, say they have never known a more difficult period for the industry.

News Shopper:

Carole said: “We run a safe and family-friendly pub which is an important part of the local community.  We’re really frightened that without help we’ll not be able to survive the pandemic.”

Jamie continued: “That’s why we are so grateful to the council for stepping in to support us at this difficult time.

“It’s a great boost for the community and to local businesses and we are so thankful they have listened to our concerns.  We’d love to buy them a pint when we reopen!”

Councillor Peter Fortune, Deputy Leader of Bromley Council said: “We well recognise the extremely difficult conditions that our local hospitality sector has faced.

“This grant funding shows support for these businesses which also act in many ways as community hubs.

“We have kept the application process to a minimum to make this as efficient as we can.

“Hopefully these businesses will soon be able to re-open again, when better times are confirmed, with this grant scheme very much focused on that.”
