Lewisham’s CCTV is set to get a £1 million upgrade.

At a meeting of mayor and cabinet on Wednesday (January 13), members approved the contracting of Eurovia Infrastructure Limited to upgrade CCTV cameras across the borough and CCTV control room equipment.

The upgrade is expected to take 12 to 13 months at a cost of £984,876.31.

Lewisham’s current CCTV cameras are more than 20 years old.

“And although they have been maintained regularly, have deteriorated over time and are no longer fit for purpose,” according to a report presented to mayor and cabinet.

The about 150 cameras, which are set up in town centres and areas with historically high levels of crime, are set to be replaced with digital ones.

Presenting the report, Councillor Brenda Dacres, cabinet member for safer communities, said: “Violent crime is continuing to show an upward trend in London.

“While we are proud to take a multi-faceted approach to reducing violence in the borough, our CCTV is a crucial part of our approach.

“For example to deter, to detect, and to provide evidence of offences, and to ensure that our community feels safe within Lewisham.”

Details of when the work will begin have not yet been published.
