The Winterland event at Bluewater shopping centre has closed until further notice amid surging Covid-19 rates across Kent and London.

The outdoor Winterland features Christmas-themed rides and attractions, but was advised to close on Friday (December 18)

A statement on Bluewater's Facebook page confirmed the decision had been made after local infection rates have doubled in recent weeks.

London and Kent may even face new restrictions before Christmas, with a travel ban and 'Tier 4' introduced.

Matt Hancock announced last week that a new variant of Covid-19 had been found in the region which was 'highly contagious'.

News Shopper:

A message on Bluewater's website reads: "In reaction to rising Covid cases in the region, we have been advised to close our Winterland attraction until further notice.

"We are sorry that guests will be inconvenienced but the health and safety of everyone is our number one priority.

"Anyone with booked tickets will be contacted by a representative of the event to make alternative arrangements, please be patient as the team respond to these changes."

Winterland, which opened at the start of the month, had been advertised as an outdoor event offering guests the opportunity to enjoy festive-themed attractions and rides, including bumper cars and a carousel.

The experience, which was held outside The Village near Zizzi, was originally set to run until Christmas Eve.

Bluewater remains open for shoppers, as is allowed in Tier 3 although no restaurants or cafes are open to sit inside - just takeaways are allowed.
