A man was rushed to hospital after he managed to escape from a flat fire that broke out late last night (Friday, December 11) in Catford, Lewisham.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed to the scene of the blaze, sending six fire engines and around 40 firefighters to tackle the fire.

Images taken at the scene showed smoke billowing from an upper-story flat on Thomas Lane in Catford.

A cherry picker vehicle used by the fire brigade to help battle the fire, which broke out on the sixth floor of a seven-storey building in the area.

The occupant, who managed to escape the flames, suffered from smoke inhalation and was rushed to hospital by emergency first responders.

Station Commander Jim Ryan, who was at the scene, said: "There was a lot of smoke visible from the outside of the building and our 999 Control Officers took five calls to the fire.

"Crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control.

"Some areas of the flat suffered minimal damage as the doors into the rooms had been closed.

"It’s always a good idea to shut internal doors as in the event of a fire this can prevent further damage and limit smoke spread."

LFB said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
