A leisure centre in Sutton has been supporting GB athletes with their Olympic training during the second lockdown.

David Weir Leisure Centre has been hosting training sessions for elite athletes at the centre’s outdoor athletics facilities.

“Being able to use the track means everything," says sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.

"Losing access in the first lockdown I saw a big drop off in my training."

The two time European Champion added: "Now I’m able to keep the same level and intensity as expected to make the Olympic team for Tokyo.

“Being in peak physical condition is what it takes for me to get to the next level in my preparation for the games.”

Tremayne Gilling has been using the track to help him prepare for the Winter Olympics.

He said: “Being able to train at David Weir Leisure Centre during the lockdown has been a crucial part of my training.

“Training stimulates me and throughout lockdown it has actually been more of an advantage for my mental health, because without so much distraction I've been able to focus better.”

“The system the centre has put in place is very well thought out, coordinated and I'm always happy to train there as it is my second home.”

Everyone Active's general manager, Robert Anderson, speaks of how vital facilities have been during the pandemic.

He said: “We’re really glad that we’ve been able to provide our facilities to elite athletes during the second lockdown.

“It’s so important for them to stay focused and training can really help the athletes both physically and mentally.

“David Weir Leisure Centre is Covid secure and the athletes are following the strict measurements and procedures we have in place whilst attending their training sessions.

“We’ll continue to support them in any way we can during the rest of the lockdown.”

Everyone Active's four centres will reopen this week.
