Covid-19 rates are falling across London, but remain high in some south east London boroughs amid pleas for the capital to avoid Tier 3 restrictions next month.

Locally, a surge in cases in Bexley has finally eased off and begun to fall after it peaked near 300 new cases per 100,000 last week.

Greenwich and Bromley have, however, continued to see a rise in new cases, whilst Lewisham remains far safer than its neighbours.

But following the announcement of the latest seven-day Public Health England figures, the narrative across London is that of a slight decline in cases.

A total of 18 boroughs saw a fall in cases, and the data suggests London reached its second wave peak around 10 days ago.

This could have a profound impact on local businesses and residents, with ministers due to announce tomorrow which areas of the country are going into the different tiers.

And MPs in the capital have been campaigning against inflicting stricter tier 3 measures in London from December 2.

Latest figures showed the seven-day rate of new cases per 100,000 in the capital falling to 187.4 on November 19, the fifth day of decline since a possible peak in the second wave on November 14 of 199.4.

The new figures show the Covid-19 rate for the past week, based on the number of new cases per 100,000 people living in the borough, and uses stats from tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

And Bexley continues have the highest Covid-19 infection rate in south east London, and one of the highest in the capital, with 249.7 cases per 100,000.

This is a result of 620 new cases in the past seven days, but in positive news, this represents a fall from the 270.7 rate the borough recorded last week.

News Shopper:

Greenwich has continued its worrying rise in new cases, with 574 recorded in the last week, meaning its Covid-19 rate has risen from 167.7 to 199.3.

Bromley has also seen a rise in infection rates, albeit a very small one of just 2.7, bringing its rate to 154.1 with 512 new cases.

Lewisham bucks the trend however, and continues to have one of the lowest rates in London and beyond.

The borough recorded 340 new cases, bringing its rate to 111.2, a decline from 128.5.

Nearby, Dartford has recorded a whopping infection rate of 280.6, and neighbouring north Kent area Gravesham has reached 384.3.

Elsewhere in London however, the rates are more stable, with Croydon recording 162.7 and Merton 178.7.

It is thought the Government might seek to drive case numbers down hard at the start of December in anticipation of a rise at Christmas, where three households will be allowed to meet for up to five days, a controversial decision if it means extended periods of tighter restrictions.

But there has been much debate over whether capital should be placed in Tier 1, 2 or 3 level restrictions, or even be split into different restriction levels itself.
