ONE person has died after testing positive for Covid-19 in Sussex, according to the latest figures.

Data from NHS England shows one fatality was recorded by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust during the latest 24-hour reporting period. It brings the total number of deaths at the trust to 173.

In the past week there has been nine coronavirus deaths in the city, compared to seven the previous week.

No additional fatalities were recorded in East Sussex, where the total stands at 108. The total figure for West Sussex also remains the same at 132.

The number of recorded cases rose across the county by a total of 381.

Almost a third of new cases were recorded in Brighton and Hove, with 107 people testing positive.

It means 3,304 cases have now been reported in the city since the pandemic began.

More than half of the latest positive cases were in West Sussex, with 174 people confirmed to have the virus. Figures show 7,492 people have tested positive in total since Covid-19 hit.

In East Sussex there were 100 new cases recorded, bringing the total figure for the area up to 4,059.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 27,301 over the period, to 1,317,496.

Nationally 376 more fatalities were recorded, bringing the total death toll to 51,304.

Only deaths in hospitals where the patient has tested positive for Covid-19 are recorded, with deaths in the community excluded, such as in care homes.
