Boris Johnson is set to announce a second nationwide lockdown for England, as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country.

The three-tiered system of local lockdowns announced by the Prime Minister in an effort to tackle the spread has only been in place for 19 days, but it is thought tougher action has been deemed necessary.

Non-essential shops and hospitality will have to close for a month from next Thursday until December 2.

Schools and universities however will be allowed to remain open.

The policy shift comes after new data showed the extent of cases across England.

The Office for National Statistics estimated that 568,100 people in households were infected with coronavirus in the week ending October 23.
