Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich and Lewisham make up four of the five boroughs with the lowest coronavirus infection rates in London, according to the latest figures.

Ealing is currently the worst-hit borough with 145 new cases per 100,000 in the week up to October 10, while Bexley is the lowest on 69.

With Bromley on 70.1, Greenwich on 72.6 and Lewisham slightly higher on 75.9, infection rates are currently lagging across south east London.

The figures have sparked calls from MPs for borough-specific restrictions, rather than London-wide.

Senior Conservative Sir Bob Neill, who is the MP for Bromley and Chislehurst, told Sky News: "I think it's a mistake. I think it's disproportionate for the whole of London."

"And although they are increasing, I think to move this way for the whole of London, this one size fits all approach, is a mistake because of the very real harm it will do to businesses," he added.

News Shopper:

The figures, for the seven days to October 10, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (October 11-14) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The rate of new cases in the seven days to October 10 is compared to the rate in the previous seven days, with the number of new cases recorded in each period shown in brackets.
