A WELLING student has scooped the coveted title of Student Journalist of the Year, in this year's national student media awards.

Heidi Blake, 21, of Danson Crescent, Welling, is currently in her final year of an English and politics degree at York University.

At this year's awards, sponsored by the Guardian newspaper, Miss Blake not only took the title of Journalist of the Year, but won feature writer of the year and diversity writer of the year.

Miss Blake edits the one of the university's newspapers - Nouse - whose website was also runner-up in the student website of the year category.

Her success has won her a £1,000 cash prize and the chance of two months' work experience at the Guardian, for which she will be paid £1,500.

Describing Miss Blake's work, the judges, which included Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, BBC Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark and Jon Snow from Channel 4 News, said: "She writes with maturity and sensitivity and consistently to a high standard."

Miss Blake, whose father is the independent cleric Bishop Jonathan Blake, said: "I am thrilled and completely bowled over."
