The number of new cases of coronavirus has continued to rise at a worrying pace across all four south east London boroughs over the last week, with over 500 new cases confirmed.

Friday's update from Public Health England of the seven-day rate of new Covid-19 cases across England show a continued national surge in cases as the country navigates a full second wave of the virus.

In south east London, the infection rate in some cases has nearly doubled, and whilst all sit below the national average, the new cases will do little to fan the flames of talk of a new lockdown in the capital.

The new data, which shows a total of 594 cases recorded in the four south east London boroughs over the past week, comes as the north of England prepares to re-enter into lockdown amid a surge in cases.

With cities such as Liverpool, Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield all reporting over 2,000 new cases in the past seven days, the north continues to witness the worst resurgence of the virus.

Below are the full number of local cases, and the seven-day Covid-19 rate as of October 5 (the data for the three most recent days are excluded for accuracy).

The rate is expressed as the number of new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people, and is based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government's testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Leiwsham now has the highest Covid-19 rate across of south east London and north Kent, with a seven-day rate of 61.5, up from 40.2 after 188 new confirmed cases of the virus this week.

Cases also rose in all three of the other boroughs, and all currently sit around the 55 cases per 100,000 people mark, which is still below the national average.

Bexley recorded a COvid-19 rate of 56.4, nearly double last weeks rate of 29.4, after 140 new cases.

In Bromley, the Covid-19 rate sits at 56.0, which has also nearly doubled from 28.9 after 186 new cases.

Greenwich's rate has actually close to tripled with 53.2 cases per 100,000 people, after 80 new cases saw it rise from 19.9.

Cases also rose across the UK on Monday following the addition of hundreds of cases that went unreported because of a technical error with an Excel spreadsheet.

Public Health England said that the technical issue resulted in 15,841 cases across the UK between September 25 and October 2 being left out of the reported daily coronavirus cases.

The problem has led to a delay in efforts by NHS Test and Trace to find the contacts of those who tested positive for the virus, in some cases by around a week.

It said the outstanding cases were transferred to NHS Test and Trace "immediately" after the issue was noted and all cases were passed on to tracers by 1am on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Dartford has recorded a Covid-19 rate of 32.0 after 36 new cases, Lambeth 77.3 (252 new cases) and Croydon 66.7 after 258 new cases.
