Firefighters have been tackling a house fire in Thamesmead since around midday, and a mother and two children living in the house are reportedly safe.

But the family's home has been badly damaged in the blaze, with the first floor of the end of terraced house completely destroyed and the rest of the house disfigured.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a house on St Brides Close in Thamesmead at around 12pm today (October 6).

Five people managed to flee the house before the Brigade arrived, with fire crews from Barking, Bromley, East Greenwich and Eltham fire stations at the scene.

The London Fire Brigade said the first floor and staircase between the ground and first floor of an end of terraced house were destroyed by the fire.

Most of the ground floor and a staircase between the first and second floors and part of the second floor were also damaged.

There are no reports of any injuries, and their cat also reportedly survived.

The fire was reportedly brought under control just after 2pm, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
