ROADWORKS which caused huge delays on the A23 have now been completed.

The A23 northbound was fully reopened shortly after 1am.

A diversion was put in place yesterday to help drivers bypass the area, but the road closure still caused severe disruption in surrounding roads.

Some drivers reported delays of up to four hours on the A23 yesterday as huge tailbacks formed.

Speaking at 8.37pm yesterday, a Highways England spokesman said: “There are severe delays on the A23 on the approach to planned works at Bolney.

“We are aware motorists have been stuck there and we are working to get the works complete as quickly as possible.

“Please take alternative routes.”

Argus reader Neil Kempshall said: “(There are) massive tailbacks on the A23 heading north near Hickstead, avoid it if you can.”

Sussex Police confirmed officers had attended the scene to “help Highways officers get the traffic flowing with the diversions in place”.

In the early hours of this morning, a Highways England spokesman confirmed the works had been completed and the road had been reopened.

He said: “The roadworks closure on the A23 northbound (A273/A2300) is now fully open.

“(The) diversion route is no longer in place.”
