Extinction Rebellion activists unfurled banners across the Bromley A21 this morning warning of a ‘climate emergency’ to begin a weekend of action.

The slogans appeared at 6am on a footbridge overlooking the junction of the A21 with the M25, a busy route for people heading out of the city for the bank holiday weekend.

The protest group is planning a range of demonstrations in towns and cities across the UK over the next few days, before the start of a new ‘rebellion’ on September 1.

One of the ‘rebels’, Bromley resident Sheila Grace, said: “It is undeniably clear that we are in a climate and ecological emergency.

“The UK Met Office has predicted that a 4-degree rise could occur as early as 2060, and scientists have made clear the catastrophic consequences of this.

“The government has a moral duty to care for its current and future citizens but is failing to do so.

“By not taking emergency action now, the government is willingly exposing us all to life-threatening changes in our physical environment.”

Five activists including Co-Founder Roger Hallam were arrested by the Met Police and charged on Tuesday ahead of the planned demonstrations.

All five people arrested by the Met were charged with "conspiracy to cause criminal damage" before the start of a series of protests starting on Friday (August 28) aimed at raising awareness of the climate crisis and escalating ecological catastrophe.

The UN Secretary General António Guterres warned last year that "the climate emergency is a race we are losing" as he urged nations and states to drastically reduce their carbon emissions and avoid "apocalyptic" impacts of global heating.
