Police arrested a moped driver who led them on a high-speed chase around Chislehurst, almost knocking down an elderly pedestrian.

Officers attempted to stop the moped at around 12.45pm yesterday when it was seen driving the wrong way on Sidcup road.

As the driver sped ahead, a pursuit was authorised due to concerns about the safety of other road users.

A police helicopter was called to assist officers on the ground.

Officers stopped the moped on the A20 near the Frognal Corner Interchange at approximately 2.20pm and one man was arrested at the scene.

Rea, 24, of White Horse Hill, who witnessed the chase, said: "I was working at my dining table talking to my mum on FaceTime and I could hear a helicopter really low down above my flat.

"I went to the balcony and there was police everywhere.

"Then all of a sudden a boy on a moped came round the corner on the wrong side of the road on to the pavement outside my flat nearly running down an elderly gentlemen.

"He disappeared into the park around the back of my flat, police everywhere chasing him.

"There must have been 10 or more up and down the road."
