Firefighting crews from Sidcup are attempting a massive fundraising fitness challenge, cycling 1940 miles in August and September.

The fundraiser is in honour of the Firefighter's Charity, which has been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19 and the cancellation of fundraising events, leaving it nearly £200,000 short each month.

The charity was set up in 1940, supporting the families of firefighters who gave their lives during the Second World War.

"Here at Sidcup, believe it is only right that we offer our support in the charity's time of need, just as they have done to countless firefighters."

But the challenge the firefighters have set themselves no mean feat.

They want to complete 1940 miles in total "across all four watches in Sidcup", starting in early August and ending in September.

Over the eight weeks, this works out at 485 miles per watch, and around 40 miles per person.

The miles will be completed mostly in the gymnasium on station. Firefighters can use any of the cardio-based equipment in there, from static bike, treadmill, rowing machine or cross trainer.

But the firefighters will also be getting out and about locally to try and raise some extra money through donations.

"We really can not emphasise just how amazing this charity is and the work that they put in to providing assistance to Firefighters and their families in times of need.

"Now, in their time of need, it is only right that we offer them the assistance they so desperately need." So far around £700 has been raised.

The Fire Fighter's Charity offers specialist, lifelong support for members of the UK fire servies.

They "empower individuals to achieve mental, physical and social wellbeing throughout their lives," from in service to retired to spouses and dependants.

The charity recently launched an urgent appeal for help after Covid-19 left them in serious financial trouble.

The pandemic has hit the majority of charities hard, with the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice another to have suffered.

On the first day, crews cycled the first 45 miles over three hours, and have so raised over £1,000 in total.
