Detectives investigating the murder of a man who was shot in the back of the head while walking home through a Penge park have made an arrest.

A 25-year-old man was held on Sunday on suspicion of murdering Dean Edwards, and is being questioned at a London police station.

Mr Edwards, 43, was killed in the early hours of July 12 in Betts Park in Penge, after meeting friends for a drink.

He was was about to leave the park via the Croydon Road exit near Tremaine Road, when he was shot.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, said: "This is a major development in our investigation and we will continue to work hard to make sure that those who are responsible for Dean's death are brought to justice.

"The people that killed Dean had absolutely no regard whatsoever for his life or for the law.

"Dean's death is a tragic reminder that carrying a gun has devastating consequences and I continue to plea to anyone with any information to come forward either by calling police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously."

Detectives have previously said they believe the popular father-of-four and grandfather to six was killed in a case of mistaken identity.

Appealing last week for witnesses, Ms Kieran said: "We believe this is a case of mistaken identity.

"There is nothing in Dean's life, background, family and friends, or in the pubs he visited earlier that evening that indicate he's had a row or argument, nothing."

And Mr Edwards' daughter Hollie Edwards, 21, told the PA news agency: "Our dad was a friendly, bubbly and loving person.

"He was never confrontational and hated arguments, he was a big softie at heart, loved all the grandchildren and spoiled them.

"He was a good, innocent person."
