The latest data showing the rate of new cases of Covid-19 in every region in England have been released, showing a peak in new cases rising above five per 100,000 in three of the south east London boroughs.

The number of new coronavirus cases per rolling seven periods have been jumping up and down with reasonable consistency in the area over the last month, staying below worrying rates.

But with NHS chiefs reportedly worried about a second wave, several south east London boroughs have reached reasonably high peaks in the last seven days.

The figures are released by Public Health England on a rolling seven-day basis, showing the number of new cases of the virus per 100,000 people, based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

The latest data is for the seven days running up to July 25 (the previous three days are always excluded as they are likely to be revised).

As of Sunday, none of the south east London boroughs were recording new Covid-19 cases above five per 100,000 population, making them amongst the safer regions in the country.

But in the last few days, the number of new cases has risen, and Bexley has risen to a slightly worrying 7.3 cases, the highest in south east London and a jump from 4.9 previously.

Lewisham has reached 5.3 cases per 100,000 people, a small rise from 4.6 on the weekend.

Greenwich has also breached the five mark with a jump from 1.7 cases to 5.2 in under a week.

Bromley has actually stayed the same, with just 1.5 cases per 100,000 population.

Dartford is currently the highest of all the surrounding regions with a recent jump placing it at 14.6 cases per 100,000, meaning it in one of the country's highest brackets.

Whilst the rises are worrying, the infection rate in the capital remains relatively low compared to the UK's worst coronavirus hotspots.

Blackburn and Darwen recently overtook Leicester with 79.2 cases after a total of 118 new cases were recorded, and regions in the North East such as Oldham and Trafford have also seen notable jumps.

Nearby, Sutton recorded 7.3 cases per 100,000 people, Croydon 2.6, Wandsworth 4.3, Merton 3.9, Lambeth 5.2 and Southwark 5.0.

Earlier today, Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, told the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Coronavirus (APPG), that NHS managers were concerned about a second wave.

"I would say in relation to the second spike issue or something coming, the levels of concern among our members - the people who are leading NHS trusts, who are leading in primary care and all levels in the systems - is very high," he said.

"I mean, of course, there's real concern about winter and the compounding factors there, but also about an earlier spike.
