Three men whave been arrested after a man was slashed and seriously injured at the Thorpe Park the park in Chertsey on Saturday (June 18).

The stabbing took place at the popular theme park on Saturday afternoon after two groups reportedly confronted each other on a bridge near to one of the park's exits.

Police said that the attack happened shortly before 5pm on Saturday.

During the confrontation, a 26-year-old man was "treated for a slash wound to his stomach", police said:

"Two groups of people were involved in an altercation on the bridge close to the exit and one man aged in his twenties has subsequently been treated for a slash wound to his stomach.

"He has been taken to hospital and his condition is described as serious," a Surrey Police spokesperson said.

In a later update posted on Monday (July 20), a spokesperson for Surrey Police said that a third person had since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the stabbing.

"A 26 year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.

"Two men, both aged 26 and from London, who were arrested on Saturday evening as part of our investigation have been bailed until 15 August pending further enquiries," police said. 

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) responded to the incident on Saturday as it unfolded, and provided medical care to the stabbing victim after this was begun by on-site medical staff at Thorpe Park.

The theme park kept its doors open on Sunday after the incident as police investigators attended the scene of the stabbing.

"We feel confident we have the necessary security procedures and measures in place to keep our guests and staff safe," a spokesperson for the Park said.

In a statement posted to Twitter on Sunday, Thorpe Park said: "We would like to reassure guests that the incident which took place at the resort as a result of an altercation between two groups yesterday was very much an isolated incident.

"The health, safety and security of our visitors and staff is our primary objective."

Two men aged in their twenties were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the aftermath of the stabbing.

"We’re still trying to establish what has happened, however I’d like to stress that this incident is not being treated as terrorism-related at the current time," DI Andy Greaves of Surrey Police said.

"I’m keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who has video footage of this assault. The two groups of people were close to the exit inside the park on the bridge when the assault took place.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate all those believed to have been involved. Officers will remain in the area for some time this evening and I’d like to thank Thorpe Park for their assistance and co-operation with our investigation," he added.
