MPs and councillors have responded to the recent announcement of Sutton being chosen as the site for a new emergency healthcare facility.

The plans will see 'six major' services including, A&E, critical care and emergency surgery be combined and moved to a new site in Belmont.

The new care facility will arrive as part of a massive state investment of £500 million for improving Epsom and St Helier Hospitals.

Under the proposals, around 85% of current services will stay put at Epsom and St Helier.

MPs across Sutton and Merton have expressed their views about the new changes, with many being left 'devastated' by the news.

Below are some of the reactions following the decision made on July 3.

Councillor and St Helier resident Jean Crossby, said: "I am devastated by the announcement today.

"I have lived on St Helier for 43 years, eight of my grandchildren and five of my great-grandchildren have been born at St Helier hospital along with many visits to A&E.

"It takes away key services from the most deprived part of our borough and puts the long term future of the hospital at risk."

Carshalton and Wallington MP, Elliot Colburn said: “This really is a momentous day for our area.

"These plans are incredible news for patients who will benefit from a new hospital in Sutton, as well as upgraded facilities in St Helier."

MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Scully posted on Twitter:

Wimbledon MP, Stephen Hammond said: "Welcoming news that Improving Healthcare Together approved the £500m investment in our healthcare .

"After years of delay, let's get this done and give local people better NHS services."

Mitcham and Morden MP, Siobhain McDonagh also took to Twitter:

Merton Councillor, Stephen Alambritis said: "It is clear that the needs of Merton’s residents have been pushed aside.

“The impact of the pandemic has not been adequately considered.

"They have failed to take account of the impact on deprived communities of the proposals.

"Taking A&E, children’s inpatient beds and maternity services out of St Helier Hospital is a terrible decision."
