Activists are staging further protests in Lewisham and Woolwich this weekend in support of George Lloyd's family and Black Lives Matter.

Stand Up to Racism is holding “static, socially-distanced” demonstrations at 12pm at Ladywell Fields, Lewisham, and at General Gordon Square, Woolwich on Saturday.

This follows hundreds gathering outside Deptford library in a similar event last weekend, where protesters heard from range of speakers including representatives of ‘Not a Trend’, a new anti-racist school students organisation, and poet Mark ‘Mr T’ Thompson.

Harold Wilson, who chaired the event, said: “This was a powerful event, which showed that people in Deptford want to take a stand alongside the millions who have protested for Black Lives Matter across the US and across the world.

"We should remember that the racism faced by black people in the US is also present here, such as the terrible treatment of the Windrush generation, the ‘hostile environment’ directed at immigrants and refugees, and particularly in regard to the abuse of ‘stop and search’ powers by the police.

"We need to continue to raise our voices to demand an end to such racist policies”.

The group recently launched a petition demanding that charges against a Lewisham woman be dropped, after her arrest by six officers on May 9 sparked an outcry.

Footage has been shared widely of six police officers pinning down Kamyimsola Olatunjoye, 28, as she shouted "I can't breathe".

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed an investigation into her arrest and "subsequent treatment in custody" is taking place.

The Mayor of Lewisham recently added to criticism of police, who he described as using “excessive force”.
