A man from Sidcup died at the scene of a car crash in Brighton this morning.

The 21-year-old driver hit a lamppost on Wilson Avenue at 6am.

One of three passengers in the car, a woman in her 20s, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Emergency services, including the fire brigade, attended the scene, setting up a cordon. 

In a statement the police said: "We are investigating a fatal road traffic collision in Brighton and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"Officers, ambulance and fire crews were called to Wilson Avenue at 6am on Wednesday (17 June) to reports of a black Vauxhall Corsa hitting a lamppost and a parked vehicle.

"Sadly, the driver of the car - a 21-year-old man from Sidcup - was confirmed dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed.

"One of three passengers in the vehicle - a woman in her 20s - was taken to hospital with serious injuries. 

"The road was closed while enquiries are underway and the Coroner's Officer has been notified."
