An 18-year-old from Lewisham has been convicted of being in possession of 20 knives after police caught him with a massive haul of blades.

Denique Iswom Newell, of Mercator Road, Lewisham, was caught after proactive police officers spotted three people standing next to a car in Camberwell and stopped them.

The car drove off, but was later found unattended nearby, and Newell was arrested nearby along with a discarded bag of knives.

Police said the bag contained 20 knifes, including several zombie knifes and lock knives, all wrapped in cellophane as if new.

Officers also managed to arrest the two men seen standing near the car, but wut they were released without further action.

In a police interview, Newell gave no comment and at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, April 29, he pleaded guilty to 20 counts of possession of a knife.

Detective Sergeant Paul Connelly said: “Our top priority is reducing violent crime in London, and we are working day and night to keep our communities safe.

“This bag was stuffed with dangerous blades that should not be on our streets. Newell will now have to pay the price for possessing these weapons."

He added that the public can play a large part in keeping London safe by reporting any information about a crime.
