Tens of thousands of pounds have been donated so far to a charitable fund set up by Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust for its heroic staff.

The fund was set up to support the amazing staff who work for the trust, from booking temporary accommodation for colleagues who have households in quarantine, to morale-boosting items like coffee machines and care products.

Given the exceptional circumstances its staff currently face, the charity fund is now also being used to help purchase additional equipment and make vital improvements to help staff and patients across the two boroughs.

As NHS workers across the UK continue to battle against an national crisis, the trust has asked members of the public if they'd consider making a donation.

"We know you love your NHS and have been overwhelmed by the support so far – any money received will be so gratefully appreciated," the trust said.

So far, over £30,000 has been raised from the appeal, with a number of people going above and beyond to fundraise.

Five local men have sacrificed their own hair, shaving it all off last week and raising nearly £4,000 for the trust.

The self-titled Eggheads said: "The NHS could do with all the support we can offer so let’s band together and do what we can to help out, however big or small.

"We understand times are difficult for everyone and we could all do with isolation being a bit more enjoyable, so why not by having a laugh at our own expense?"

A number of individual donations, large and small, have been added within the last few days.

In recognition of the heroic and tireless work staff at the hospital are carrying out 24/7, dozens of people have left messages reading "Thank you from the bottom of our hearts," and "I am so proud of you, my family thank you for your compassion and bravery."

One fundraiser, a woman called Rachel, sadly lost her husband Andy in December 2015, but she said the care he recieved in the intensive care unit in Lewisham Hospital was "phenomenal."

On her fundraising page in memory of Andy, she has raised over £12,000 for the trust's charitable fund.

Another couple who have also experienced tragedy have raised £5,000 in memory of their daughter, Clara, who died 38 weeks into pregnancy.

Clara was delivered into the Quiet Little Room in Lewisham Hospital, which they said was "invaluable", and are now asking anyone who wants to "to donate to support the room and the incredible staff who work at the hospital."

If you'd like to donate, the charitable fund is available here, along with all the available fundraisers who are raising money for it.
