An army of over 600 volunteers are ready to take to the streets to support vulnerable residents as part of a major new initiative from Greenwich Council.

Over 1,700 signed up to a borough-wide appeal for volunteers last month, with the council organising widespread good wishes into a coordinated community response to Covid-19.

The new initiative has seen an existing council call centre double its capacity, launching as a new 'Community Hub'.

The team has already taken over 6,000 calls, according to council leader Dan Thorpe, and he is encouraging more people who need it to call the Community Hub for help.

“There are going to be many difficult days ahead and we are all going to need to pull together and dig deep to support and protect the most vulnerable people in our communities," said Cllr Thorpe.

"That’s why we are working with charities, voluntary organisations, businesses and partners, to do as much as we can to help.

"Our team have already taken over 6,000 calls and are starting to make a real difference.”

Efforts are also being coordinated with Charlton Athletic Community Trust, and many of the volunteers are already out there helping our community's most vulnerable.

Residents and representatives from Charlton have been pictured carrying out food deliveries to people's homes or dropping of vital supplies.

John Butcher (pictured) was the first volunteer to start supporting local residents via the council’s campaign.

He said: “I delivered a letter, did shopping trips with Charlton Athletic Community Trust and I’ve also been helping someone sort out their energy bill and put money on their card.

"Everyone needs to pull together, and if you’re able to help, you should volunteer. It’s just about working together if you’re able to.”

Greenwich Council said a "huge thank you" to everyone who has registered so far, but that more volunteers are needed.
