A DRUNK thug broke his brother’s nose and battered his sister during a family row.

Darren Oliver lost his temper when his younger brother Ryan goaded him in Eastbourne.

The 30-year-old had downed 12 cans of lager while cooped-up with his family during the coronavirus lockdown.

He was sharing a bedroom with his brother, who taunted him about not being able to see his newborn son.

Oliver grabbed his brother by the throat and punched him in the face, leaving him with a bloodied nose.

When his sister Stephanie Oliver intervened to help, he attacked her with a computer tower and also punched her in the face.

Brighton Magistrates’ Court heard how the row erupted in the family home in Marsden Road, with paramedics and police having to be called.

Appearing in the dock, Oliver claimed he was remorseful over the attack, and has issues over his alcohol misuse.

But his siblings said they don’t want him back in the house after the attack.

Paul Lamb prosecuting, said the incident happened at Marsden Road, Eastbourne.

He said: “The defendant drank alcohol all day, an estimated 12 cans of lager.

“His brother was playing computer games, and when the defendant asked him to turn the noise down, his brother answered no.

“This seemed to annoy him, he grabbed his brother by the throat, pinned him on the bed, and punched him several times to the face.

“Later, when his sister intervened, he attacked her with a computer tower, and punched her in the face, before punching his brother in the face again, causing the broken nose.”

Mr Lamb said the attack on both Oliver’s brother and sister were both sustained assaults.

Noelle Magennis, defending, said her client was fully remorseful and upset by what had happened.

He struggles with alcohol misuse, and she said Oliver’s younger brother had taunted him over the discovery of becoming a father to a child of his ex.

“His brother made a cutting comment about his child, and he just lost it, he completely lost control,” Ms Magennis said. “He is so upset that he has done this to the people that he loves and cares for.

District Judge Amanda Kelly said: “This is a time when families across the country are going to be in much closer proximity to each other than usual.

“It is inevitably going to put a lot of strain on many relationships, but that is no excuse. Your behaviour was unacceptable and caused a serious injury to your brother and sister.”

The judge imposed a six-months suspended prison sentence on Oliver, now of Wilton Avenue, Eastbourne.

He must also complete 60 hours on unpaid community service and 20 rehabilitation sessions after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating.

The judge ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £122 surcharge, and put him under a restraining order not to contact his siblings
