A team of Wandsworth students have been crowned national table tennis champions.

The squad from Ernest Bevin College consisted of Zion Boumpoutou, Nahom Goitom, Howard Onweng and Adam Banmohamed and the group took out the Under-19 Boys’ title at the Butterfly School Team Championships.

Having come through county and regional heats to reach the national finals in Hinckley, the team faced the three other qualifiers and won their opening two matches 8-0 against St Mary’s Academy from Hull and 6-2 against Whitgift School from Croydon.

That left them in a straight fight with Nottingham’s Carlton-le-Willows Academy, who had also won their opening two matches.

It went to the wire as they two sides drew 4-4 and could only be separated on sets difference across the match, with Ernest Bevin taking the verdict 18-11.

For the champions, Zion Boumpoutou said: “It feels pretty amazing to win.

"We’ve got to this stage a lot of times and not come up successful, so this year means a lot, especially for me as it’s my last year.

“There’s strong belief in the team and we always give our utmost and support each other and have fun.”
