A mutual aid group has been set up to help those who are at high-risk or in need of supplies due to shops being plundered in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Over 1,400 have signed up to ‘Bexley Covid-19 Mutual aid group’ in a bid to reach the vulnerable in their community.

Residents are generously offering to walk dogs, pick up prescriptions and donate nappies - with 7 confirmed cases in Bexley so far.

Teresa Ewart from Crayford set up the group yesterday, intending to create a valuable resource for the community.

Teresa and admin members, Lis and Martin Radbon believe the group will help relieve the anxiety of the pandemic.

Several residents have raised the aid group to News Shopper, in the hopes it will reach hundreds of those in need.

Julie Shields from Welling said: “Half of my road are over retirement age.

“I have visited all neighbours and included offers of help with adding to my online shopping orders and doing local shopping.

“I also keep them informed by a personalised weekly newsletter incorporating everything about our road and area.

Sarah Lewis who owns ‘Sarah Janes hair and beauty’ in Nuxley Village, Belvedere said: “I joined the group because the community needs to get together at times like this.

“I am also a local business owner and work closely with the public.

“The hair salon is upping sanitisation so that people can still come and escape the rat race and try and relax a little.”

Kaz Mac, from Sidcup, who has created leaflets to inform the elderly, said: “I’ll be delivering between 50 to 75 leaflets tonight to all houses in my immediate area.

“I will then set up a WhatsApp or Facebook group so we can all look after the elderly and vulnerable in our very local area.”
