Another local councillor will vie for a seat at London’s city hall, after Bromley’s deputy leader Peter Fortune won the race to represent the Tories in May’s London Assembly election.

Cllr Fortune secured the nomination for Bexley and Bromley in a four-way race, beating out fellow Bromley councillor Nicola Dykes, as well as Bexley deputy leader Louie French and Beckenham Conservative Association chairman Scott Pattenden.

The high-profile list prompted Bromley Cllr Suraj Sharma to tweet “That was the toughest selection event I’ve ever seen” following the decision.

Cllr Fortune told the local democracy reporting service after the event he was “delighted and honoured” to be selected.

“The elections in May are vitally important for residents in Bexley and Bromley,” he said.

“I will fight hard to get Shaun Bailey elected as our Conservative Mayor and to earn the privilege to serve the people of Bexley and Bromley as their next Assembly Member.”

Cllr Fortune had mostly recently ran for the Tories in Leeds Central in last year’s general election.

He’ll now vie to be one of 25 assembly members sitting on the London Assembly as the member for Bexley and Bromley.

The seat has been held by Bexley councillor Gareth Bacon since 2016.

However, the Tory member has announced he will relinquish both his Bexley and London Assembly roles following his election as the MP for Orpington last year.

The constituency has been held by the Conservatives since the creation of the London Assembly in 2000.

Last month saw Labour put forward Bexley Councillor Stef Borella to contest the seat for the party.

In what is turning out to be a busy election for south-east London members, Bromley Council’s Marina Ahmad will also run in Lambeth and Southwark for Labour.

The Greater London Authority elections will be held on May 7 and will see residents vote for the Mayor of London, as well as the 25 members who will sit on the assembly.
