A plaque honouring a "hero" bus driver who died in an Orpington crash has been unveiled at his former depot.

Kenneth Matcham, a 60-year-old grandfather of seven, died and 15 passengers were injured when a car collided with two buses on Sevenoaks Road last Halloween.

His daughter Shellie Jay Gardner has paid tribute to the "unbelievable" staff at Green Street Green Go-Ahead bus garage, who erected the memorial for their "much missed colleague" on Friday.

Ms Gardner, 33, who attended the unveiling with her mother, brother and children, said: "The bus garage couldn't have done any more for us.

"We had the Orpington manager, the operations director and the managing director there.

"Hearing them speak about my dad made me cry. We just wish he knew how much he was loved.

"It was so lovely to be there."

The bus company previously set up a fundraiser for the family, which raised more than £22,000.

Mr Matcham, who lived in Gravesend, worked at Go-Ahead for 12 years, receiving regular awards for his safe driving.

He was an avid collector of "almost everything", from meerkat dolls to Thunderbirds figurines, who would take his family to his favourite holiday destination, Florida, as much as possible.

Two double-decker buses were driven in homage to his "huge" funeral, which brought Gravesend to a stand-still.

Go-Ahead contacted the family afterwards, offering to install a plaque with their permission.

Ms Gardner, who lives in Swindon, said: "My Dad was amazing. He would do literally anything for anyone.

"The night before he died, he was chasing me for Halloween pictures of the children.

"I spoke to him just 13 minutes before he died. He was winding me up about never sending him a Christmas card on time.

"I told him I had bought him a card that day. I ended up putting it in his coffin.

"His front room was a shrine to his kids and grandkids.

"My Dad saved 15 people on that bus; he's called the hero bus driver.

"A lot of other people were hurt as well - three people went through the windscreen - but it could have been so much worse."

A 24-year-old male driver was arrested was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and drug driving in the aftermath of the fatal crash.

One witness told the PA news agency that the scene was "carnage like nothing I've seen before".
