Kids are being encouraged to reclaim their streets from cars and have fun outdoors under a scheme from Greenwich Council.

The 'Play Streets' scheme will see residential streets in Greenwich closed to traffic for a few hours in the evening whenever there is an event planned.

The council says the scheme promotes safer neighbourhoods and community spirit, helps reduce air pollution, and increase outdoor activity in a fun and engaging manner.

Parents and residents are able to apply to close the street and act as marshals, with the first events to be held in the borough in spring 2020.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, leader of Greenwich Council said: “Lots of families are looking for ways in which to reduce the time their children spend on personal devices, watching TV and online.

"What better way than to organise a Play Streets event and encourage everyone outdoors. It also builds community spirit, with parents and residents able to apply to close a street and act as marshals.”

The scheme has been successfully employed in boroughs across London, with Bexley, Lewisham, Croydon, Newham and Westminster all employing play streets.

News Shopper:

Greenwich Council is inviting people to apply for events via email who then must send a letter to all residents to introduce the idea and invite them to an informal meeting.

This is offers a chance to express concerns, work out practicalities and enlist sufficient numbers.

Once applications are approved, the council provides road closed signs to put up on the day.

News Shopper:

The streets won't be completely closed during the play streets session, with people living on the street still able to drive to and from their homes at 5mph.

Neighbours and friends need to be recruited to help on the day to warn and escort cars in or out.

For events to be held in spring 2020, please submit your application by Saturday 29 February.
