A Penge man has been jailed for assisting an offender who attempted murder by shooting his victim at close range on Halloween.

Tariq Crookes, 21, of Anerley Park Road, drove Imran Ibrahim to a takeaway in Brixton on October 31, 2018.

Ibrahim, also 21, exited the passenger side of the car, approaching a 24-year-old man who was leaving the shop. After a short exchange, Ibrahim shot at the victim from just a few metres away.

The victim was hit in his right arm and made off on foot, chased by Ibrahim and others. He managed to flee the scene and later presented at hospital with a wound to his arm.

Detectives from Trident began an investigation and a vehicle fitting the description was found near Crookes’ home.

Mobile phone analysis following his arrest on November 1, 2018, also put Crookes close to the scene at the time of the incident, as did ANPR data.

Following further enquiries, Ibrahim was arrested on December 18 of the same year and was remanded in custody.

Crookes was sentenced to four years for assisting an offender at Peterborough Crown Court on August 9 2019.

He was also disqualified from driving for seven years at the same hearing.

Imran Ibrahim, 21 (27.02.98) of Austral Street, Brixton, was sentenced to 21 years’ with five years on licence for attempted murder.

He was also sentenced to five years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, three years for a deferred sentence relating to a violent disorder in 2016 and one month for possession of herbal cannabis – all to be served concurrently.

On sentencing, the judge said Ibrahim was a “dangerous individual” who has showed no remorse for his actions.

Reporting restrictions had been in place until the conclusion of a re-trial for two further defendants. Both were found not guilty.

Detective Constable Dominic Doyle, who led the investigation, said: “This was a pre-planned attack and there is no doubt that Ibrahim set out that night to cause serious harm to other individuals.

“The victim in this case was extremely fortunate not to suffer more serious injuries as he was shot from such a close distance.

“Ibrahim has never owned up to his behaviour that night and we are pleased that he will no longer be able to cause further harm on the streets of London.”
