The founder of Matthews Yard says it should be moving to the centre of town come April.

Earlier this month the Croydon Guardian reported that the arts hub would close for good in its current location on February 22.

This comes after Croydon Council's planning committee approved plans for an eight storey block of 55 flats to be built at the site.

The future was unclear for Saif Bonar and his Crowdfunded venture, but he has now revealed that they have agreed terms for a new premises in the very heart of Croydon near the Whitgift Centre and Centrale (although the exact location is yet to be announced).

"We hope to sign the contract and start fit out works on Feb 1, with a view to opening for our 8th anniversary on April 21," he said.

"The public's support has been tremendous and without it we would not have been so determined to find a suitable new home nearby.

"The new premises will include a cafe and bar, a small workspace and a bigger, multi-function events space with a capacity of 100 people seated."

He added that the new location will enable them to expand the reach of the Yard, while still providing a platform for emerging artists and a safe space for community groups.

But this doesn't come cheap.

Mr Bonar said that they will face at least a £50,000 bill for deposits, advance rent, legal fees, surveys, license applications and the fit out of the premises.

Which is why a fundraising page has been set up to help cover some of the costs.

"We are asking anyone who has benefited from Matthews Yard over the past seven years and who is in a position to do so, to donate just £3, a little more than the cost of a cup of decent coffee, to help us secure our new home," the founder of the arts hub said.

"If everyone who has benefitted from Matthews Yard over the years did this, we would be able to create a state of the art community and cultural hub in the heart of Croydon.

"All donations will go to Matthews Yard UK Limited, a non-profit entity, and if for any reason, we do not sign the lease, donations will be refunded.

"Thank you ever so much for all your support in the past, and any you can give now or in the future."
