Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a blaze in a block of flats in Thamesmead last night.

Around 75 residents self-evacuated from the block on New Year's Day due to the flat fire on the third floor of the building on Yarnton Way.

The fire is believed to have started late yesterday (January 1) on the balcony of the flat and spread to the living room of the property.

A woman inside the affected flat managed to escape before the Brigade arrived, whilst other occupants were able to stay inside their unaffected flats.

Fire crews from Plumstead, Erith, East Greenwich and New Cross fire stations attended after being called at 10:02pm, and the fire was under control by 11:14pm.

Part of the flat on the third floor was damaged by the fire, but the cause is believed to be accidental.
