Longstanding Bromley and Chislehurst MP Bob Neill has been knighted in the New Year Honours list for services to politics.

The Conservative politician, 67, was re-elected this month, having represented the constituency since 2006.

Born in Ilford, he initially trained as a barrister before embarking on a career in politics, which saw him lead the Conservatives in the London Assembly before his election to parliament.

Responding to the announcement, he said: "Delighted and deeply honoured but also very humbled to receive a knighthood in the New Years Honours List.

"It is news wonderful for our family especially for Ann-Louise and my mum who have both supported me so much and for our friends.

"I hope that it is also a tribute to the work of the many people, organisations and causes that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years, both in the constituency and nationally. Thanks are due to all of them."
