An Orpington animal sanctuary is raising funds for a new pen after an outgoing pig escaped and wandered the streets.

Eddie the pig bundled through the walls of his enclosure at the Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary on Wednesday, exploring the surrounding area until he was spotted by baffled residents on nearby Augustine Road.

He was ultimately lured back to his pen by an ASDA delivery driver, who reportedly borrowed a punnet of plums from his van.

To prevent a repeat-incident, Angela Bradley, who helps run the sanctuary, is appealing for donations to shore-up Eddie's enclosure.

Ms Bradley, 39, said: "Eddie's really loving, he thinks he's more dog than a pig. He just likes getting out and meeting new people.

"He was plodding along like he owned the street, saying hello to everyone. He's an escape artist.

"The fence has become quite run down and patchy, it's just bits and pieces - wood and wiring - so with enough force he can just walk through it.

"But after that he still has to get through two more fences."

Safe Haven adopted Eddie, who is three, six months ago along with three other pigs, after another sanctuary lived in closed down.

Ms Bradley opened the sanctuary along Elise Bradley, Jennie Fallarino and Lorraine Knight in 2014, moving to Orpington 18 months ago.

They care for a wide range of animals, around 45 in total, including cats, chickens, horses and, of course, pigs.

The sanctuary, which is run on a voluntary basis, is hoping to raise the £500 needed to replace Eddie's paddock through donations.

Ms Bradley added: "We try to help every animal in need, and we can't do it on our own.

"We're at the point where we're considering giving up the sanctuary, its become so difficult.

"We would really appreciate any help."
