Residents are invited to watch the Borough switch on its Christmas Lights and to also enjoy a day of family fun and entertainment at Richmond's Town Centre on November 21.

The event - which is organised and funded by Be Richmond, has been designed to showcase the whole town and involve all parts of the residential and working community.

Council leader Gareth Roberts said: “As Council Leader, I am delighted to be able to support such an important local community event as the Richmond Christmas Lights Switch On.

"I’m an avid Star Wars fan, so it’s a real honour to wear one of these iconic Stormtrooper costumes, which are instantly recognizable by movie-goers of all generations throughout the world.

"What makes it even better, is that these are authentic, original items designed by local businessman Andrew Ainsworth, who has generously loaned them for the evening.

"I look forward to seeing everyone on November 21st – may the Christmas force be with you!”

Festivities begin at noon on Hill Rise with a one-day Christmas Market selling locally-made and sustainably sourced crafts, gifts and food.

Santa’s Grotto will be held in the garden of the Vineyard Community Centre from 2pm until 6pm.

Visits cost £2.50 which includes a gift, face painting and other festive activities and all proceeds go towards helping the homeless.

There will also be a live performance at Richmond's War Memorial from Band of The Irish Guards and children from St Richard’s School will take-part in a parade which starts at the main stage in George Street.

Between 5pm and 6.30pm the area will be a hive of festive activity with music, jugglers, stilt walkers, elves, costume characters, street performers, choirs, panto characters from Snow White at Richmond Theatre and much more.

The Mayor of Richmond - Cllr Nancy Baldwin, will switch on the Christmas lights at 6:15pm and the event will close with a spectacular firework display on Richmond Green at around 6.45pm.
