A couple from Welling are asking people to help them bring their best man home after he cracked his skull in a horror crash in Bali.

Reuben Armstrong, 27, a web developer originally from Grimsby, was riding a moped last Saturday when he turned a corner and smashed into a wall.

His housemates, Kirsty Boddy and Lincoln Savage woke up to the awful news of Reuben’s accident on Saturday morning.

“We got a message through on Instagram to say Reuben had been in a serious accident.

“It was a whole morning of ringing people up when we realised his travel insurance would not pay out because he wasn’t wearing a helmet,” Kirsty told News Shopper.

The events manager, who has known Reuben for more than 10 years, described her frantic rush to find £12,000 to pay for Reuben’s surgery to fix a bleed on the brain.

“It was about 20 hours before they started prepping him for the operation. They refused to operate until we presented the money upfront,” she said.

Luckily, Reuben’s boss Ian Stratford-Taylor, CEO of Equals PLC, offered up £7,000 to help cover the cost and Reuben underwent a seven hour procedure.

“They told us the operation went well and they managed to stop the bleed, but we don’t know what damage was done in those 20 hours,” Kirsty said.

After setting up a JustGiving page to fund Reuben’s treatment, Kirsty and Lincoln have raised a whopping £30,000 to pay for his medical costs and are now hoping to up the total by another £20,000.

“We’ve managed to get Reuben’s mum and his nan out to Bali, and Lincoln has arrived there today too.

“We’re so lucky and thankful for everyone who has donated so far, but it’s heartbreaking.

“It’s killing us. He is literally the embodiment of positivity.”

Lincoln has been friends with Reuben since their school days in Grimsby and asked him to be best man when he marries Kirsty next July.

An update on the fundraising page from Lincoln reads: “After seeing his condition first hand I can be sure that it is going to be quite a while before he is recovered.

“It crushed me to see him so aggravated. He is currently restrained in order to stop him from aggravating his injuries.”

Despite Reuben’s horrific injuries, Kirsty and Lincoln are hopeful their housemate and best friend will make a full recovery.

“We’re taking it day-by-day at the moment. He’s talking and he’s moving his body because he’s agitated. That almost seems like a miracle already but it has been a real shock for Lincoln to see him like that,” Kirsty explained.

While they wait for Reuben’s condition to improve, the couple is encouraged by the number of people who have donated to his cause so far.

“The amount of people that have paid out just goes to show he is the kindest guy. It shows how many people care about him.”
